- Gascony (Gascogne) is a former province of France located between the Garonne River and the Pyrenees. Part of the ancient Roman Aquitania, it was conquered by the Visigoths, then the Franks. It takes its name from Vascones (Basques), who invaded the region around the middle of the sixth century, before being reunited with the duchy of Aquitaine. Gascony, after a revolt, formed a duchy after 768, passed in 1058 to the house of Poitiers-et-Aquitaine, and subsequently shared its history with Aquitaine. Gascony was finally united with France in 1453, at the end of the hundred years' war.
